Artists' Salon Series - August 28, 2009 - North Carolina Songwriters Co-Op

The Orange County Arts Commission sponsors Artists' Salons are that held from 6:30-9 pm in the West End Theatre at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. Light hors d'oeuvres will be served. Salons are free, for artists of all kinds - performing, visual, literary, whatever! Come to meet, network, and build a better arts environment for all Orange County Artists.

The topic for August is “North Carolina Songwriters Co-Op”. Guest panelists are:

Dwight Sullivan, Co-op Coordinator : Overview of Coop and Program & monthly Live Music Lab session
John Saylor, Open Mic Host: on the Chapel Hill Open Mic
Jamie Anderson, Contest Director: The 12th Annual Songwriting Contest (now accepting entries)
Chuck Champion, Co-op Communications Director: "My Co-op"
Doctor Oakroot, Open Mic Host: on the Durham Open Mic
Louise Bendall, Co-op Membership Director: "My Co-op"
Dennis Mikel, Host of the Raleigh Open Mic
Kirk Ridge, Co-op Workshops Director: The NEW monthly Song Doctor sessions (coming this Fall)

The topic for November will be “Business Counseling for Artists”. Guest presenter will be Ron Ilinitch, Regional Director of the NC Small Business and Technology Development Center in Chapel Hill.

The purpose of the salon is to bring together artists of all disciplines in a casual setting to share ideas, concerns and information. It is the hope of the Orange County Arts Commission to not only bring the artistic community together but to facilitate closer ties between artists and the general community of Orange County. Better serving the needs of artists is one of the goals of the Orange County Arts Commission. Artists often work in isolation and the salon can serve as a place to get feedback from peers as well as to share all of the problems and pleasures of being an artist with kindred spirits.

The Orange County Arts Commission thanks the ArtsCenter for allowing us to use their space for this series.

Arts co-op in downtown Chapel Hill - August 24

ARTISTS INTERESTED IN DOWNTOWN CHAPEL HILL ARTS CO-OP (COLLECTIVE)
TO MEET ON MONDAY, AUGUST 24th:

4-6 pm, Leadership Group Meeting (Human Resources Training Room)
6-8 pm, Interested Local Artists Meeting (Council Chambers)

A leadership group, which formed after an exploratory meeting on creating an Artist Cooperative in downtown Chapel Hill, will hold a meeting on August 24th, 2009, at Chapel Hill Town Hall, Council Chambers beginning at 6 pm. The leadership group has spent the last three months, meeting bi-weekly as a large group and additionally as committees of marketing, management-organization and finance, drafting a business plan to help in determining the feasibility of such a venture. Based on many parameters, the group believes that this venture should move forward and wants to further explore the interest of local artists to participate.

INTERESTED LOCAL ARTISTS - Please come to the meeting on Monday, August 24th from 6-8 pm in Council Chambers at Chapel Hill Town Hall (405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Chapel Hill).

A+/Cameron Museum Integrated Lesson Plans

The A+ Schools Program is delighted to announce the launch of a free, online, integrated visual art resource for classroom teachers!

Developed as a collaboration between the A+ Schools Program and the Cameron Art Museum (Wilmington, NC), the site contains a total of 20 lessons and over 40 images that teachers can access for use in their classrooms using a data projector. Most lessons take about 30 minutes to complete. The lessons integrate language arts, social studies, science and visual art, and many offer specific prompts for writing. The lessons were funded with a generous grant from the Corning Foundation, and were written by veteran A+ Fellow Martha Burdette.

What is the Arts Commission?
The Orange County Arts Commission is a department of Orange County government which works to develop the arts in Orange County, North Carolina, which includes the townships of Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and Carrboro. Created in 1985 by the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, the Arts Commission also has a fifteen-member citizen advisory Advisory Board.

Our Mission
To promote the artistic and cultural development of Orange County, North Carolina.

Our Role
The Orange County Arts Commission is the countywide arts agency that ensures the growth of local arts experiences by providing funding and support for diverse, high quality programs. The Arts Commission is also Orange County’s information clearinghouse on local arts events and programs. As a branch of Orange County local government, our offices are located in Hillsborough, both the county seat and geographic center of the county.
